Quenching the Holy Spirit

SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT

“QUENCHING THE HOLY SPIRIT”
I Thessalonians 5: 14-22 (NKJV)

WE QUENCH THE HOLY SPIRIT:

1. WHEN WE FAIL TO “RESPECT LEADERS” (1 Thess. 5: 12-13)

Respect and honor are very big to God:
– Authorities (Rom. 13: 1)
– Government Officials (I Tim. 2: 1-2, Rom. 13: 3-4)
– Parents (Eph. 6: 1-2) Pastors (I Tim. 5: 17)

Paul says we can “Quench the Holy Spirit” when we don’t:
1. Recognize them (v. 12), “recognize those who labor among you”
2. Follow them (v. 12), “and are over you in the Lord” (over: to guide, lead, direct)
3. Esteem them (v 13) “and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake”

2. WHEN WE FAIL TO “HELP OTHERS” (I Thess. 5: 14-15)

How do we “Help” others (look at the verbs in these two verses)
1). “Warn” (v. 14), “warn those who are unruly”
2). “Comfort” (v. 14), “the fainthearted”
3). “Uphold” (v. 14), “the weak”
4). “Patient” (v. 14) “with all”
5). “Render” (v. 15), “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone”
6). “Pursue” (v. 15), “but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all”

3. WHEN WE FAIL TO “GIVE PRAISE” (I Thess. 5: 16-18)

How should we “Praise God?”
“In our life” (v. 16), “In our prayers” (v. 17), “in all our circumstances (v. 18)

4. WHEN WE FAIL TO “ACKNOWLEDGE SCRIPTURE” (I Thess. 5: 20-22)

We acknowledge Scripture: prophecy (v. 20) testing (v. 21) abstaining (v. 22)
